TREK: Trails Read, Enrich, Kindness
Many people find themselves “trying to get their ducks in a row” as they approach retirement —including their philanthropy. For one Marion couple, that meant finding a creative way to establish a legacy fund that would anonymously support several causes that have been important to them for years.

The creators of the TREK Fund started with a $100 donation to Marion Community Foundation in 2024. Their plan is to fully fund the legacy after their passing, using the proceeds from their life in Marion—including their house, cars, possessions, and savings. They want their life in Marion to impact Marion forever.
‘TREK’ is an acronym for Trails, Read, Enrich and Kindness, representing the four causes the fund creators hope to support permanently: the Marion Tallgrass Trail, Marion Public Library, WOSU Public Media, and the Marion County Humane Society.
With no heirs, the donors want their legacy to support organizations that have enriched the community where they spend their leisure time.
“We want our support to have a permanent effect,” they explained, adding their belief that “to give whole heartedly, is to give anonymously.”
