The Band Played On

LEGACY Summer 2025 — Rick Baird and Don Wolfe have been pillars of the Marion City Schools Band Department for decades, dedicating their lives to inspiring young musicians and fostering a love for music. Rick began his journey with Marion City Schools in 1979, serving for 42 years. Don started his career in 1971 and continues to contribute to the band program to this day—50+ years of dedicated service.
Rick and Don were a perfect blend of strengths. Rick had a gentle and encouraging demeanor that enabled a level of trust, musicality, and precision. This harmonized with Don’s relentless pursuit of innovation, excellence, and educating students beyond musical skills. Together, they led the band to perform in 13 Bowl Games, four NFL games, countless parades, and many other meaningful performances. Their complementary styles created a dynamic and successful program, fostering a culture of teamwork, dedication, trust, and musical excellence that shaped the lives of thousands of students.
Together, they created a legacy of musical excellence and inspired countless students.
To honor them, the Baird-Wolfe Music Legacy Fund has been created. It will support the band program at Harding High School. Numerous donations have been and continue to be received from individuals, organizations, and fundraisers, like the sale of pillows made from band uniforms and a healthy dose of competition among the Marion City Schools’ elementary schools. Donations are being accepted.
