HIRING: Director of Finance

MARION COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Director of Finance
Position Supervisor: President & CEO
Position Location: Marion, Ohio

About Marion Community Foundation

Marion Community Foundation strengthens the Marion community through philanthropy, leadership, and civic engagement. The Foundation partners with donors and community organizations to help build a generous, educated, healthy, collaborative, and vibrant community.

Position Summary

The Director of Finance operates as both a hands-on practitioner and a leader. This position is responsible for both driving high-level financial administration, financial reporting, internal controls, decision making, and key administrative operations, as well as actively executing day-to-day accounting, bookkeeping, and operational details. Reporting to the President & CEO, this role bridges leadership with direct operational execution.

The Director of Finance supervises designated staff and coordinates with external accounting, human resources, information technology, banking, and investment professionals. The role works closely with the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Chief Investment Officer (CIO), financial advisors, and other internal and external partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities below describe the primary functions of the position. The role will require a balance between performing daily financial tasks and leadership. Priorities may change with the Foundation’s needs.

Financial Administration and Reporting

• Perform day-to-day financial administration, including hands-on bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, cash management, donor fund records, and investment-pool entries.
• Prepare, review, and reconcile monthly financial records, bank and investment accounts, fund management databases, and related supporting schedules; investigate and resolve discrepancies.
• Develop and maintain reliable financial reports, forecasts, budgets, and analyses to support management and governance decisions.
• Evaluate and improve financial processes, systems, documentation, and internal controls to promote accuracy, efficiency, and appropriate stewardship of Foundation assets.
• Manage working relationships with banks, investment advisors, accounting professionals, and other financial service providers.

Governance, Audit, and Compliance

• Coordinate Finance Committee operations, meeting preparation, financial materials, reporting, and follow-up on assigned actions.
• Coordinate the annual external audit and work with the Foundation’s accounting and tax professionals on preparation and review of IRS Form 990 and other required filings.
• Help ensure compliance with applicable federal and Ohio requirements relating to the Foundation’s financial operations, charitable activities, reporting, and recordkeeping.
• Maintain, review, and implement financial, gift-acceptance, and operational policies and procedures; recommend updates as needed.
• Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation and communicate significant financial issues, risks, or control concerns to the President & CEO.

People, Vendor, and Administrative Operations

• Supervise, coach, and evaluate assigned direct reports, currently including the Data & Systems Manager and Office Manager; establish priorities and support professional development.
• Coordinate with the Foundation’s human resources and payroll provider on payroll processing, personnel-related filings, and HR policy questions, while ensuring responsibilities are clearly assigned.
• Coordinate with the technology provider on network and system reliability, hardware procurement, cloud backups, cybersecurity practices, and related vendor services.
• Oversee general administrative operations, including office and facility needs, supplies, and coordination of Board and committee meetings.
• Monitor external vendor performance, resolve operational issues, and escalate significant concerns to the President & CEO.

Data, Systems, and Investment Coordination

• Partner with the Data & Systems Manager to improve business systems, reporting, data quality, user training, and cross-departmental processes.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and their potential implications for Foundation operations, including data security, privacy, financial controls, and appropriate use of artificial intelligence or digital assets.
• Assist as the internal operational liaison to the CIO and financial advisors, supporting accurate fund flows, reconciliations, records, and investment-related reporting.
• Coordinate with relevant internal and external partners to maintain consistent information across accounting, donor, and fund-management systems.

Required Qualifications

• Seven years of experience in financial management, accounting, business administration, or a related area.
• Demonstrated experience performing and overseeing financial processes, reconciliations, reporting, internal controls, and external professional service providers.
• Strong proficiency with spreadsheets, accounting systems, databases, and financial reporting tools, and Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, Teams).
• Proven comfort and willingness to work in a hybrid role – equally capable of leadership and day to-day functions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information clearly to leadership, committees, and non-financial colleagues.
• Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, discretion, and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
• Commitment to the mission and community impact of Marion Community Foundation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
• Experience with nonprofit accounting, charitable foundations, donor-restricted funds, grantmaking, or fund accounting.
• Experience with fund-management platforms such as REN Iphi or comparable systems.
• Experience coordinating an external audit, tax filings, or financial reporting for a nonprofit organization.
• Experience working with investment pools, investment advisors, or financial institutions.
• Experience leading, supervising, or coordinating the work of staff and/or cross-functional teams.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position primarily involves office-based financial, administrative, supervisory, and computer-related work, along with participation in meetings with staff, Board members, committee members, and external partners. The position requires the ability to perform its essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation. Marion Community Foundation is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.  Applicants and employees who may require an accommodation are encouraged to discuss their needs during the application process or employment.

Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable federal, Ohio, or local law. The Foundation provides equal employment opportunities throughout the application and employment process and will consider reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants and employees with disabilities, as required by applicable law.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated salary range for this position is $80,000–$90,000 per year. The final offer may depend on job-related factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, and demonstrated skills. Benefits may include health, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, a 401(k) employer match after one year of service, and paid time off, subject to applicable eligibility requirements and the terms of the relevant plans and policies.
