Charles L. Hastings Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Charles L. Hastings Memorial Fund honors the memory of David M. Hasting’s father, who spent his life in agriculture, having grown up on the family farm in the 1920s.
After his high school graduation, Charles attended Ohio Wesleyan until the start of World War II. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Air Force. Shortly thereafter, he broke his leg and was temporarily deferred, whereupon he became part of the Army and completed tours of duty to Africa, Italy and France. In France, met and married his wife, Marguerite, remaining in France after the war for two years working for the United Nations Relief Agency helping repatriate displaced persons and concentration camp survivors.
Charles brought his new family to the United States and enrolled in Ohio State University College of Agriculture. Upon the completion of his degree, he taught vocational agriculture in Clyde, Ohio, for 13 years, as well as young farmers’ classes, and became a Certified Seed Inspector. Later in his career Charles joined OSU Extension as the Country Agricultural Agent in Knox County, Community Resource Development Agent in Mt. Gilead, and Area Supervisor in Fremont (Ohio). Post-retirement, he was an Agricultural Lending Consultant for Mid-Am Bank, and, in 1988, became a Presidential Elector from Ohio.
