The Value of Lifelong Learning

2025 ANNUAL REPORT | Robert McBeth believed deeply in the value of work—and in the power of meaningful work to shape a life. When he changed careers, that decision proved transformative. Today, his legacy will continue by supporting students preparing to enter the profession that became his second calling.
In September 2025, the family of Robert David “Bob” McBeth created a lasting tribute to a man remembered for his kindness, curiosity, and commitment to his community by establishing the Robert McBeth Scholarship Fund. Their goal was simple and purposeful: to help others get to work building their futures. In addition, the family made a generous contribution to the Marion Public Library Endowment Fund, reflecting Bob’s lifelong belief in learning and their shared desire to support institutions that strengthen Marion for everyone.
Born in Marion in 1952, Bob was the oldest of five children and a graduate of Elgin High School and The Ohio State University. His career was defined by persistence and a strong work ethic. He began as an orderly at Marion General Hospital, working to pay his way through college. After earning a degree in plant pathology, Bob later returned to Marion Technical College to retrain for work in Medical Laboratory Technology. He ultimately became a medical technologist, a role that allowed him to combine science, precision, and service that truly mattered to him. His scholarship will support students enrolled in Marion Technical College’s Medical Laboratory Technician program, helping them prepare for essential, in-demand careers.
Bob’s wife, Marilyn, shared that her connection to Marion Community Foundation began through memorial giving and grew stronger after she participated in an estate-planning course at the Marion Public Library. “I like the idea of encouraging young people,” she said. “I also want to help the library have stable funding and the freedom to celebrate diversity.”
Through this memorial scholarship, Marilyn hopes to help a young person find
meaningful work, build a life, and contribute to the Marion community—just as Bob did.
