Scharer Fund Supports Court Comfort Dog
Marion Municipal Court has a furry new staff member. This adorable Bernadoodle named Nora serves as a comfort dog for the court and probation offices. Nora was acquired thanks to a grant from the Ron & Laura Scharer Fund at Marion Community Foundation.
This is the second time the Scharers have recommended a grant from their donor advised fund to support a public service dog. Previously, a grant from the Whetstone Financial Fund helped the Marion Police Department acquire K-9 Chip, another Bernadoodle, also chosen for the breed’s calm demeanor.
Having had dogs of their own for the last 30 years, Laura said, “We love dogs and know their ability to bring comfort in stressful times. I think all dogs are good therapy.”
Nora, whose name means “honor,” will receive three training courses over the next year, ranging from basic obedience to full therapy training. Fully trained, she will be a calming presence throughout the Marion Municipal Court office area and the probation office for staff, witnesses, and other court visitors.
