Ted & Elaine Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund

A true gentleman. Philanthropic-minded. Community leader. These are descriptions you are likely to hear from anyone who knew the late Edwin “Ted” Mitchell (1912-2007). Among his many legacies and accolades, Ted was a founding member of the Marion Community Foundation, serving as a trustee emeritus until his death.

Born in 1912 in Ironton, Ohio, Ted was a 1937 graduate of The Ohio State University School of Law. He practiced law for 57 years—most notably at the firm of Streletz, Halberstein & Mitchell in Marion.

Ted was the father of five children by his first wife, Marjorie, who died at the young age of 43. Ted married Elaine Smith Mitchell (1921-2020) in 1957 and shared almost 50 years together.  Following his passing, Elaine, created the scholarship fund to support students at her husband’s beloved Ohio State University, of which he was a Marion Campus trustee for many years. She continued to grow the fund for many years.

Elaine was a 1939 graduate of Harding High School and worked in the payroll department of Marion Power Shovel for 15 years. When she and Ted married, she became a full time mother to his five children and a home maker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and is well remembered for her long-standing volunteer work at the MedCenter Hospital.
