Bernie H. Christen Faith-Based Youth Camp/Conference Fund
Created in 2026, this field of interest fund was created from the estate of Bernie Christen (1931-2026) to encourage and support Marion area youth in attending faith-based youth camps and conferences that promote spiritual growth, faith-based fellowship, discipleship, leadership development, and personal growth.
Bernie was a graduate of Sylvania Woodward High School, Class of 1949, and enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1951. Bernie sailed aboard the USS Ellison, serving as a gunner’s mate before returning to Ohio and establishing his career with Bell Telephone, earning the nickname “The Telephone Man.” He enjoyed fishing in Michigan and the many muscle cars that he cherished over the years.
The intent of the Christen Fund is to remove financial barriers and provide opportunities for young people to participate in faith-based experiences. Grants are awarded on an application basis and may cover up to 50 percent of the cost of attendance. It is open to students in grades 6-12. A recommendation from a youth pastor, youth leader, pastor, or church leader is preferred.
