Baird-Wolfe Music Legacy Fund

Rick Baird and Don Wolfe have been pillars of the Marion City Schools Band Department for decades, dedicating their lives to inspiring young musicians and fostering a love for music. Rick began his journey with Marion City Schools in 1979, serving for 42 years until 2021. Don started his career with the district in 1971 and continues to contribute to the band program to this day, marking 50+ years of dedicated service.

Rick and Don’s careers are marked by numerous achievements as co-directors of the Harding Band. Their partnership was a perfect blend of strengths. Rick had a gentle and encouraging demeanor that enabled a level of trust, musicality, and precision. This harmonized with Don’s relentless pursuit of innovation, excellence, and educating students beyond musical skills. Together, they led the band to perform in 13 Bowl Games, four NFL games, countless parades, and many other meaningful performances. Their complementary styles created a dynamic and successful program, fostering a culture of teamwork, dedication, trust, and musical excellence that shaped the lives of thousands of students.

The story of Rick and Don’s collaboration began with an unconventional interview in the spring of 1984. Rick and Don, who had both already been Marion City Schools employees, were introduced to each other in a conference room by administrator John Steward, who simply asked if they could get along and run the band program together. Their immediate rapport and shared vision for the band program marked the beginning of a remarkable partnership that would shape the department for decades. Together, they created a legacy of musical excellence and inspired countless students with their combined talents and dedication.

In honor of Rick Baird and Don Wolfe’s extraordinary contributions, the Baird-Wolfe Music Legacy Fund has been created. Donations to this fund will help continue their legacy – ensuring that future generations of students can experience the same passion for music that Rick and Don have brought to our community.
