2019 Scholarship Awards

Marion Community Foundation is proud to announce the recipients of its 2019 Scholarship Program awards — $403,810 in scholarships awarded to 189 Marion area students. This total includes nine new scholarships since last year’s program.

Marion Community Foundation’s Scholarship Program makes awards to Marion area high school graduating seniors and college students, according to the criteria established by funds’ donors. This year’s awards include scholarships for 99 high school students and 90 college students.

WOPAT SCHOLARS –

The top award of Marion Community Foundation’s Scholarship Program – the Wopat Scholars – selected four local students for these prestigious multi-year renewable scholarships. The 2019 Wopat Scholars are: Paige Bending, Halle Marvich, Daeveonna Middleton, and Myles Steed.

Made possible by the substantial gift of the late Robert and Dorothy Wopat, the scholarship fund they created supports these substantial scholarships, as well as numerous additional Wopat Impact Scholarships, which are one-time awards of up to $5,000. The Wopat Fun, now in its eighth year, generated a total of $98,000 in awards for 2019.

Bending recently graduated and is the recipient of the Beatrice Prior Memorial Scholarship – awarded to the highest ranking female students at Marion Harding High School – in addition to a 4-year Wopat Scholarship. She intends to study cognitive science and pediatrics at The Ohio State University.

Also a new alumna of Harding, Middleton is headed to the University of Michigan this fall to begin her studies in international relations. In addition to being a Wopat Scholar, she has been awarded the Alex, Beatrice Prior Memorial, Marion Rotary Club Warren G. Harding, and Taft Middle School Department of Music scholarships from the Foundation.

Both Marvich and Steed completed their senior years at Pleasant High School. Accepted into numerous colleges, Marvich plans to study chemistry at Cornell University. She received then following scholarship awards – Pleasant Academic Boosters scholarship, Pleasant Local Schools Board of Education scholarship, and the Marion Rotary Club scholarship in honor of the late Wayne Kuhn.

Steed, who will be the first person in his family to attend college, will pursue a degree in microbiology at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. He will be supported by the Stephanie K. Lust Memorial Scholarship, as well as an award from the Pleasant Local Schools Board of Education Scholarship Fund.

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS –

Marion Community Foundation awarded new scholarships from the following new funds: Irene Ballinger Memorial Scholarship Fund, Stephen & Mary “Sally” Byrnes Scholarship Fund, Carey Family Scholarship Fund, Catherine Leila Ferguson Memorial Scholarship Fund, John F. Kreis Memorial Scholarship Fund, LaRue Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, Marion Noon Kiwanis Club Scholarship Fund II, Max Ross Memorial Scholarship Fund, and United Church Homes Scholarship Fund.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE –

The 2019 MCF Scholarship Program concluded in late April. The Scholarship Committee consisted of Kathy Goodman (chair), Larry Geissler, Sue Jacob, Ruth Johnston, Megan Queen, Kevin Smith, Chuck Speelman, and Nikki Workman. This group coordinated the selection committees of the various scholarship funds, reviewed all of the applications, and provided recommendations to Marion Community Foundation’s Board of Directors.
